Rise and Fall: the work from home reality

Working from home is really rewarding and since the pandemic hit, it has become quite standard to work from home. True digital nomads are familiar with how quickly the rug can be pulled from under your feet. How quickly all your hard work comes tumbling down to ruin and there’s no human resources or union to help you!

As a digital nomad disaster can strike anytime and anywhere. Take a recent experience of mine, I had been doing well with transcription and upon requesting my payment details be updated, my account got deactivated instead. No union, no HR, nothing to help me out. With one single email my entire livelihood has been wiped out, i.e. digital meltdown.

Things like unfair account deactivation, account closure, non-payment, happens all the time. It is how you navigate these troubled waters that will set you apart from the digital rookies.

Some tips on navigating “digital meltdown”:

  • Never rely on ONE income stream. This is extremely risky especially in the online job industry. When that one income gets snuffed it’s over. Yes, I said, “WHEN” and not “IF.”
  • A support system (loving spouse, partner, friends, some humans you like) is vital to remain a functioning, healthy human. It becomes even more crucial during a digital meltdown (trust me).
  • Find loopholes wherever you can! Yes, loopholes. They are not the same hacking, fraud or cheating. Loopholes allows you to take advantage of online opportunities you would be otherwise shut out of. The loopholes will depend on the work and company, of course!
  • Network and leverage your skills. This point can’t be stressed enough, DO NOT RELY ON ONE INCOME. If you have social media skills, sell your services as a remote social media manager. If you are a transcriptionist, advertise your services. You never know what will crawl out of the woodwork.
  • Most importantly: acknowledge your failure, learn from it and grow. Wallowing in the pit of self-depreciating depression and feelings of failure will not remedy your situation. You will fall many times during your digital journey, but it is how many times you get up that matters.
Navigate troubled waters like the all-star you are!

The work from home space is polluted by fake offers and scams, and not nearly enough information available on these “job offers”. This is the sole reason why The Digital Nomad exists: shedding some light on work from home jobs. You can find the blog here at: https://thedigitalnomad22.blogspot.com/
